Abstract:

This course will introduce some of the most popular families of modal logics: alethic, epistemic, doxastic, temporal, deontic, and agentive. I will discuss their philosophical motivations, will present the basic technical background of possible worlds semantics and illustrate its use for modelling and reasoning about various philosophical issues. The emphasis will be on conceptual understanding and thought provocation rather than technical detail and depth. The course is intended for a broad audience with some background on classical logic and general appreciation of philosophical aspects of logic.
